The company has officially stated that the ongoing work to enhance the runway and build a new terminal is very much on track, putting to rest any rumors suggesting these projects have been suspended.
Scheduled from February 16 to March 27, 2026, the airport will temporarily close its doors to facilitate these vital upgrades to the runway. This closure is not merely a precaution; it is a necessary step identified by Chief Executive Mesake Nawari, who emphasized that addressing structural concerns is pivotal to ensure the airport adheres to international aviation safety standards.
Nawari noted that this decision was made with great care, emphasizing that it is essential for the long-term safety of passengers and compliance with regulations.
To ensure that air travel remains accessible during this period, Fiji Airways (operating as Fiji Link) will increase operations by offering an additional 44 flights through Savusavu Airport. In addition, Northern Air will provide two daily flights on the same route, ensuring travelers have alternate options.
This project is backed by funding from the World Bank's Na Vualiku Program and is part of a broader strategy by Fiji Airports to enhance infrastructure across the Northern Division of Fiji.
