Get ready for a thrilling Six Nations encounter as Ireland gears up for a fresh start! The Irish team has undergone a significant transformation, with some exciting new faces set to make their mark.
Ulster's Robert Baloucoune and Cormac Izuchukwu are ready to showcase their skills on the international stage, making their Six Nations debuts against Italy in Dublin. This comes as a breath of fresh air after Ireland's disappointing 36-14 loss to France in their opening game.
Head Coach Andy Farrell has made some bold moves, with six key changes to the starting lineup. Baloucoune, a try-scoring machine with six touchdowns for Ulster this season, steps in for Tommy O'Brien on the right wing. Meanwhile, Izuchukwu, who missed the autumn Tests due to injury, takes on the role of blind-side flanker, shaking things up in the back row alongside Jack Conan at eight and captain Caelan Doris at open-side.
But here's where it gets controversial... Nick Timoney, who made a significant impact and scored a try against France, finds himself on the bench once again. And this is the part most people miss: prop Michael Milne, who also scored in Paris, is not even in the matchday squad!
The Munster second row, Edwin Edogbo, is all set to make his international debut, a momentous occasion for this product of the club game with Cobh Pirates and UCC.
Farrell had this to say about the team selection: "I want to congratulate all 23 players on their selection, but I especially want to highlight Edwin [Edogbo] on his first call-up to the senior team. His performances for Munster and with us in training have been exceptional, and we aim to make this a truly special day for him, his family, and all those who have supported him on his journey."
In the backline, James Lowe returns to the left wing after losing his place to Jacob Stockdale last week. Jamie Osborne retains his spot at full-back, while Stuart McCloskey and Garry Ringrose continue their partnership in midfield. Craig Casey, who captained Ireland's summer tour last year, takes over from Jamison Gibson-Park at scrum-half.
The front row remains unchanged with Jeremy Loughman, Dan Sheehan, and Thomas Clarkson, but there's a recall for James Ryan in the second row, with Tadhg Beirne dropping to the bench.
And a big welcome back to British and Irish Lions prop Tadhg Furlong, who has recovered from a calf injury and is fit enough to take a place on the bench. Tom O'Toole, who can cover both loose-head and tight-head, is also set for his first Six Nations appearance since 2023.
So, what do you think of these team selections? Are you excited to see the new faces in action? Or do you think some of the changes are a little too bold? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! It's always interesting to hear different perspectives on these matters.
