A new category of space objects, dubbed 'platypus galaxies', is baffling astronomers. These nine peculiar cosmic entities, identified in data from the James Webb Space Telescope, defy easy classification. They are small and compact, yet they lack active supermassive black holes or the characteristics of quasars, which are enormous black holes that emit intense light comparable to entire galaxies.
The term 'platypus galaxies' was coined by astronomer Haojing Yan, who led the team studying these objects. This name is fitting because, like the platypus, a rare mammal that lays eggs, these galaxies are difficult to categorize. Yan explains that their unique combination of features is akin to the platypus's genetic code, which shares traits with birds, reptiles, and mammals.
The spectra of these galaxies exhibit narrow and sharp lines, indicating slower gas movement compared to typical quasars. While some galaxies with similar spectra host supermassive black holes, these new galaxies do not appear as 'points' in the images, adding to their enigmatic nature.
One hypothesis is that these galaxies represent a new type of star-forming galaxy from the early universe, which the James Webb Space Telescope is designed to observe. However, this theory is still under scrutiny by the research team, as the low-resolution spectra do not definitively rule out the possibility of star-forming galaxies.
If confirmed, these galaxies could be even earlier than previously known types, offering insights into the initial stages of galaxy formation. This discovery prompts questions about the processes that initiate galaxy formation and whether these small, building-block galaxies formed quietly before more chaotic mergers, as suggested by their point-like appearance.
Further research is needed, and the team plans to gather more galactic samples. The James Webb Space Telescope, launched in 2021, has a long operational lifespan, providing ample opportunities to explore these mysterious cosmic entities and deepen our understanding of the universe.
