Lindsey Vonn's Age-Defying Comeback: 4th Podium in 4 Downhill Races | Winter Olympics Preview (2026)

Lindsey Vonn, the legendary American skier, has once again made headlines by firmly establishing herself as a frontrunner for Olympic glory, clinching her fourth podium finish in four downhill races this season. With a triumphant victory on Saturday, Vonn marked her impressive career tally at 84 World Cup wins, proving that age is just a number as she continues her remarkable return to skiing at the age of 41. Her latest win not only boosts her lead in the overall standings but also solidifies her status as a favorite heading into next month’s Winter Olympics.

In what can only be described as a thrilling performance, Vonn outpaced her nearest competitor, Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, by an impressive 0.37 seconds, clocking a time of 1 minute 06.24 seconds amidst challenging conditions in Zauchensee, Austria. The weather was cold and cloudy, with snow falling, leading to a shortened course due to Friday's training session being called off because of heavy snowfall. Completing the podium was fellow American Jacqueline Wiles, who finished 0.48 seconds behind Vonn.

"Honestly, with my starting position, I thought my chances were slim. The snow made it tough, especially at gate No. 6 where the track was virtually nonexistent," Vonn shared with TNT Sports. "I had to take some risks with my racing line to stay competitive. I executed my strategy effectively, bringing a great intensity to my run. I figured, since I had nothing to lose, I would just go all out. I told myself: 'I could end up last or first; who knows, but I’m giving it my all.'"

As the reigning Olympic downhill champion from 2010 continues to defy expectations with her stellar form following knee surgery in 2024, the competition remains fierce. One of her rivals made a comeback after an injury, while another faced a serious incident that required helicopter evacuation after a crash.

Corinne Suter, the current Olympic titleholder, returned to racing after a month sidelined due to a muscle tear. Though her performance didn’t land her in the top 20, she expressed optimism about her recovery journey ahead.

Meanwhile, the Austrian team faced disappointment when Magdalena Egger suffered a crash, resulting in her being taken away on a stretcher, despite managing to get back on her feet initially. Egger, who previously placed second to Vonn in St Moritz, lost her balance when her ski tips crossed, leading to a dangerous tumble that caused a 25-minute delay in the race.

Despite worsening weather conditions post-interruption, Janine Schmitt from Switzerland made a remarkable leap from 24th place to achieve a personal best by finishing fifth, closely following Italy’s Laura Pirovano. American world champion Breezy Johnson secured seventh place, while Vonn holds a commanding lead over Germany’s Emma Aicher, who came in sixth, by 129 points, with Pirovano currently in third.

Vonn attributed her success partly to her experience, stating that having previously raced from the lowered start helped her navigate the course better than many of her competitors. As she sits in sixth place in the overall standings, Vonn is poised to chase the downhill World Cup crystal globe and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, looks set to extend her illustrious career beyond the Olympics and into the season-ending finals. Vonn will also compete in the super-G event on the same slope on Sunday, further heightening the anticipation for her performances.
