Paul Skenes, the MLB star and passionate advocate for the U.S. military, is set to don the red, white, and blue for Team USA at the World Baseball Classic. But this isn't just about baseball for Skenes; it's a chance to honor and represent the very essence of America.
A Patriot's Journey
Skenes, a true patriot at heart, has always had a deep connection with the U.S. military. His journey began at the Air Force Academy, where he spent two years with the intention of serving his country. Although he later transferred to LSU, where he won a national championship, his desire to serve remained unwavering.
"I wanted to serve because I believe in America. It's the greatest country in the world, and those who fight for it deserve our utmost respect and gratitude," Skenes shared in an interview.
A Cause Bigger Than Baseball
For the past two MLB seasons, Skenes has been pitching with a purpose beyond personal glory. He teamed up with the Gary Sinise Foundation, pledging $100 for every strikeout he achieves, to support their efforts in aiding the military, veteran, and first responder communities. With 216 strikeouts last season, Skenes not only won the National League Cy Young Award but also raised significant funds for a worthy cause.
"It's an honor to be able to use my platform to give back and support those who sacrifice so much for our freedom," Skenes stated.
Representing the Unsung Heroes
When asked about his motivation for representing Team USA, Skenes's response was heartfelt. "It's about representing the men and women who fight for our country. They are the true heroes, and we often take their sacrifices for granted. This is my way of showing my gratitude and respect."
And here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that sports and politics shouldn't mix. But Skenes's stance is clear: "Sports provide a platform to bring attention to important issues. If I can use my position to honor our military, I'll gladly do so."
