The spill, which happened at the Russian River Treatment Plant, was caused by heavy overnight rainfall that overwhelmed the facility's storage ponds. According to Stuart Tiffen, a spokesman for Sonoma Water, the plant received flows at a rate of four million gallons per day, exceeding its capacity during dry conditions. This resulted in an ongoing situation where an unknown volume of untreated wastewater, including raw sewage, is spilling into the river.
The affected residents were alerted of the spill on Tuesday morning, and officials have urged people to stay away from the lower Russian River.
