WA's Public Schools Get $2 Billion Boost: New High School and Upgrades (2026)

The Western Australian government has announced a substantial investment of over $2 billion in public school infrastructure, a move that promises to significantly enhance the educational landscape in the state's rapidly growing suburbs. This ambitious plan, unveiled as part of the 2026-2027 State Budget, is a testament to the government's commitment to ensuring that every child has access to a quality education, regardless of their location. The funding will be strategically allocated to address immediate needs and future demands, with a particular focus on the construction of new schools and the improvement of existing ones.

One of the most notable projects is the allocation of $68.4 million for land and early works on the Alkimos North Senior High School. This investment is a crucial step in catering to the educational needs of the burgeoning Alkimos region, where the population is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. The construction of this new high school will not only provide much-needed capacity but also contribute to the overall development of the area.

In addition to the new school, the budget includes $78.2 million for major upgrades at six schools across the state. These upgrades range from the construction of new sports halls and sports science facilities to the creation of early childhood education blocks. For instance, Champion Bay Senior High School will benefit from $21.4 million for a new sports hall and refurbishments, while Byford Primary School will receive $12.1 million for a new early childhood education block. These improvements are designed to enhance the overall learning environment and provide students with access to modern facilities.

The budget also addresses the need for expanded capacity at four schools, with a total investment of $96.2 million. Harrisdale Senior High School, Riva Primary School, Piara Waters Primary School, and Inglewood Primary School will each receive funding to accommodate additional students. Piara Waters Primary School, for example, will benefit from a $23.2 million investment to create 440 new spaces, addressing the current strain on the school's resources. This is particularly important in light of the school's current enrollment of 1100 students, with more expected in the future.

Furthermore, the government has allocated $400 million for school maintenance and minor works, ensuring that existing facilities remain in top condition. This includes an increase in base maintenance funding, upgrades to roofs, toilets, and hard courts, as well as targeted maintenance and minor works. The $86.9 million allocated for the final tranches of the Cool the Schools program and minor works election commitments will further enhance the overall educational environment.

The announcement of this substantial investment in public school infrastructure is a significant step towards ensuring that Western Australia's education system remains robust and adaptable to the challenges of a growing population. It reflects the government's commitment to providing a high-quality education for all students, regardless of their location. As the state continues to experience rapid growth, these investments will play a crucial role in shaping the future of education in Western Australia.
